Swim School Core Skill Achievement Stages

Stage 1: WHITE
The goal is "Trust and Submersion"
This is the stage where the groundwork for a strong foundation is laid.  A strong foundation will allow for all future stages to progress forward in building comfort, strength and correct stroke technique.

Stage 2: RED
The goal is "Body Position and Air Recovery"
Students were previously taught to be comfortable submerging themselves, so they now need to be taught how to come up for air as well as various positions in which they can recover for air.

Stage 3: YELLOW
The  goal is "Forward movement and Direction Change"
The children previously have been taught how to jump in and immediately recover for air.  they will now learn how to jump in, recover for air, and return to the wall.  This is the MOST crucial stage for a student to pass.  Is a student passes this stage and continues to practice on a consistent basis, that student could potentially save himself or herself is he/she ever fell into deep water.

Stage 4: BLUE
The goal is "Rotary Movement"
During this stage the students will be introduced to the side glide air recovery position.  They will be taught how to properly breather first and then add the stroke to the breathing technique.  this concept is unique to the Starfish Swim School.

Stage 5: GREEN
The goal is "Forward Movement"
The students have previously been taught to roll into a side glide position for air recovery.  they will now be taught to integrate pulls with the air recovery position, resulting in a beginner stage freestyle and backstroke.  They will also learn bilateral breathing.  At the conclusion of this stage, students will be able to swim 30 feet of freestyle, breathing to both sides.  they stroke mechanics will not be perfect; however, the student will have developed a consistent breathing pattern and will have an easier time correcting stroke mechanics.

Stroke School Core Skill Achievement Stages

    Stage 1: WHITE
The goal is "Freestyle, with an introduction to backstroke"
The focus of this stage is freestyle with an introduction to backstroke. This stage integrates the foundation and breathing techniques previously learned in swim school. Stroke school reinforces those habits while developing and critiquing proper stroke mechanics.

    Stage 2: RED
    The goal is "Backstroke"
The focus of this stage is backstroke with an introduction to butterfly. Students will be introduced to the dolphin motion which will allow the students to incorporate the dolphin motion more easily into their breaststroke.

    Stage 3: YELLOW
    The goal is "Butterfly"
The focus on this stage is butterfly. A lot of time should be spent on the hip and chest motions of the stroke. The kick and pull of the stroke will not be efficient until students have mastered the pulsing motion of the stroke.

    Stage 4: BLUE
    The goal is "Breaststroke"
The focus of this stage is breaststroke. A lot of time will be spent on the timing of the stroke and the coordination of the pull, breath, kick, and glide. The breaststroke is a “whip kick,” with the knees straight out from the hips and the feet rotating out.

    Stage 5: GREEN
    The goal is "Endurance"
The focus of this stage is endurance. After the four strokes of competitive swimming have been learned, it is now time to build their endurance in each of the strokes. Students will also be introduced to various training techniques that may be used for a lifetime, whether in competitive swimming or casual exercise.
